Introduction
Bartholemew Bouverie was born on 29 October 1753 and died on 31 May 1835. He was a British politician and a member of the Bouverie family.
Early Life
He was the third son of William Bouverie, 1st Earl of Radnor, and his second wife Rebecca Alleyne. Rebecca Alleyne was the daughter of John Alleyne of Four Hills, Barbados, and sister of Sir John Alleyne, 1st Baronet. Bouverie had notable siblings, including William Henry Bouverie and Edward Bouverie. His paternal grandparents were Jacob Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone, and Mary Clarke. Mary Clarke was the daughter of Bartholomew Clarke, a merchant from Hardingstone, and Mary Young, who was the sister and sole heir of Hitch Younge, a Member of Parliament.
Education
He attended Harrow School around 1766 and proceeded to University College, Oxford, in 1772.
Political Career
Bouverie was first elected to Parliament for the constituency of Downton in December 1779 but was unseated in February 1780 following a petition. He was again elected for Downton in 1790, serving until 1796. From 1802 to 1806, he served as a Commissioner for auditing public accounts. In 1806, he returned to represent Downton, holding the seat until 1812, and again served from 1819 until June 1826 when he lost the election.
He was re-elected in December 1826 and served until 1830. In 1829, Bouverie was appointed a Metropolitan Commissioner for Lunacy, a position he held until his death.
Throughout his time in Parliament, Bouverie was infrequently active and is not recorded as having delivered any speeches.
Personal Life
On 9 March 1779, Bouverie married Mary Wyndham Arundell, daughter of the Honorable James Everard Arundell, son of the 8th Baron Arundell of Wardour, and Ann Wyndham.
Their children included:
- Henry James Bouverie (1781–1832), who became a Commissioner of Customs.
- Reverend Edward Bouverie (1782–1874), who served as Chaplain-in-Ordinary to Queen Victoria from 1820 to 1874. He married Lady Frances Courtenay in 1811, daughter of Rt. Rev. Henry Reginald Courtenay and Lady Elizabeth Howard.
- William Arundell Bouverie (1797–1877), the Archdeacon of Norfolk, who married Hon. Frances Sneyd in 1831.
- Charlotte Bouverie (died 1810), who married Sir Henry St John-Mildmay, 4th Baronet, MP for Winchester.
- Harriet Bouverie (died 1834), who married Archibald Primrose, 4th Earl of Rosebery, and was involved in a notable social scandal involving an affair with Sir Henry St John-Mildmay, 4th Baronet, after divorcing her first husband. She married St John-Mildmay after obtaining a special permission from the King of Württemberg.
- Anna Maria Wyndham Bouverie (died 1864), who married Paulet St John-Mildmay.
His wife, Mary Wyndham Arundell, died in February 1832. Bartholemew Bouverie died three years later, in May 1835, at the age of 81.
