Introduction

Bokdo, in Manchu name ᠪᠣᡴ᠋ᡩ᠋ᠣ, also transcribed as Bukdeun, originating from the Ulanara clan. His birth year is unknown; he died in 1607 at the Battle of Wu Jieyan. His father was the first Ula ruler, Buyan, and Bokdo was Buyan's younger son and full-brother to the second ruler, Bugan.

In 1596, Ula ruler Mantai was assassinated during a border patrol. According to Ula customs, if no clear successor was designated, the clan had to decide collectively. Bokdo, as the elder, advocated supporting Bu Zantai, who had returned from Jianzhou, as the next ruler. This move prevented his full brother Xingniya, who harbored ambitions for the throne, from gaining power; Xingniya fled to Yehe. Subsequently, Bokdo gained high regard and trust.

In 1607, the city lord of Feiyou in the East Sea, Cemuthei, defected to the Jianzhou leader Nurhaci. Bu Zantai appointed Bokdo as commander-in-chief, leading an army of 10,000 soldiers including his nephew Changzhu, Huli Bu, and others, to intercept Cemuthei and bring him back to Ula for trial. When the army reached Wu Jieyan near Chimpsong in Korea, they encountered the returning Jianzhou army escorting Feiyou captives. Jianzhou generals Huherhan and Yangguli led 200 soldiers and fought the Ula vanguard. Following this, Nurhaci’s eldest son, Chuying, and his second son, Daisan, each leading 500 troops, emerged from both wings. During the chaos, Bokdo was killed in battle by Daisan. The Ula army, lacking its commander, was thrown into disarray, abandoning weapons and horses and hastily retreating. The Jianzhou army killed over 3,000 Ula soldiers, captured more than 5,000 horses and 3,000 armor pieces, and took prisoners including Changzhu and Huli Bu.

Regarding his family, records state that Bokdo had a daughter from the Nala clan who became the wife of Emperor Taiji.
