Introduction

Richard Chamberlain was born on 7 July 1840 in Camberwell, United Kingdom. He was the son of Joseph Chamberlain (born 1796, died 1874) and Caroline Harben (born 1806, died 1875). He was the younger brother of Joseph Chamberlain, a notable political figure.

Chamberlain's political career included serving as Mayor of Birmingham from 1879 to 1880. He was later elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Islington West, serving from 1885 until 1892.

He married twice. His first marriage was in 1872 to Mary Dawes, the daughter of Henry William Dawes, an ironmaster from Kenilworth. His second marriage took place in 1887 to Rahmen Theodora Swinburne, the daughter of Sir John Swinburne, the 7th Baronet.

Richard Chamberlain died on 2 April 1899 at the age of 58. He was interred at Key Hill Cemetery in Hockley, Birmingham.

His family included relatives involved in public service. Robert Francis Martineau, a relative of Chamberlain, served as an alderman in the City of Birmingham and was a member of the Birmingham University council.
