Philip Charles Shelley Sidney, 1st Baron De L'Isle and Dudley, was born on 11 March 1800 and died on 4 March 1851. He was a British politician affiliated with the Tory party.
Parentage and Family Background
Sidney was the sole son of Sir John Shelley-Sidney, 1st Baronet, and Henrietta Hunloke. His family lineage included the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who was his first cousin.
Education
He received his education at Eton College and subsequently attended Christ Church, Oxford.
Marriage and Offspring
On 13 August 1825, Sidney married Lady Sophia FitzClarence, an illegitimate daughter of King William IV and his mistress, actress Dorothea Jordan. Together, they had four children:
- Hon. Adelaide Augusta Wilhelmina Sidney, born 1 June 1826, died 20 September 1904. She married her first cousin, Hon. Frederick FitzClarence-Hunloke, in 1856. The marriage did not produce any children.
- Philip Sidney, who became the 2nd Baron De L'Isle and Dudley, was born on 28 January 1828 and died on 17 February 1898. He married twice, first to Mary Foulis in 1850, with whom he had issue, and second to Emily Frances Ramsay in 1893; he had no children from his second marriage.
- Hon. Ernestine Wellington Sidney, born 9 January 1834 and died 20 September 1910. She married Philip Perceval in 1868, and they had children.
- Hon. Sophia Philippa Sidney, born 11 March 1837 and died 12 May 1907. She married Count Alexander von Kielmansegg in 1871; they had no children.
Political and Professional Career
Sidney served as a Member of Parliament for Eye from 1829 to 1831. He also held positions such as equerry to his father-in-law from 1830 to 1835 and Surveyor-General of the Duchy of Cornwall from 1833 to 1849.
In 1835, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron De L'Isle and Dudley, of Penshurst, in the County of Kent. His accession to the peerage occurred fourteen years prior to inheriting his father's title.
Death and Succession
Philip Charles Shelley Sidney, 1st Baron De L'Isle and Dudley, died in March 1851 at the age of 50. His son Philip succeeded him as the 2nd Baron De L'Isle and Dudley.
