Introduction
Consort Hui of Liu, whose given name is unknown and whose birth and death dates are not recorded. She was the sister of Liu Jingzhi, a Gentleman of the Escorts, and a concubine of Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty. On May 17, the 21st year of Hongwu (1388), Consort Hui gave birth to his twenty-fourth son, Yingjing Wang Zhu Dong. On the first day of the first month of the 26th year of Hongwu (1393), she was officially conferred as Hui Consort, along with Lady Li (mother of the 23rd son, King Tang Zhu Bai) and Lady Ge (mother of the 25th son, King Yi Zhu Cang), who were also enfeoffed as consorts.
Details about Consort Hui's later life are scarce. However, historical records indicate that her son Zhu Dong was granted a fief in Anlu Prefecture, Huguang, on June 21, the sixth year of Yongle (1408). Zhu Dong died in November of the twelfth year of Yongle (1414). His son, who believed that his mother, Consort Hui, had already passed away, petitioned Ming Chengzu Zhu Di, requesting that his maternal uncle Liu Jing be brought to his fief and granted land and property. Zhu Dong often visited his maternal uncle's residence, hosting banquets, composing poetry to commemorate his mother, and personally writing the preface to his poetry collection, demonstrating his remembrance and longing for his mother.
Scholars, referencing the "Record of Chengtiang Prefecture," speculate that Consort Hui may have died in the 31st year of Hongwu (1398) by being buried with her deceased husband. According to the "Records of Nanjing's Office of Inspection," the tombs of King Ying, King Tang, and King Yi have been maintained annually, with workers hired to repair and perform sacrifices at these tombs.
