Jenna Louise Welch (1919–2019) was the mother of former U.S. First Lady Laura Bush. She was born in Midland, Texas, and married Harold Bruce Welch, with whom she had one daughter, Laura Lane Welch, later known as Laura Bush.

Jenna worked as the bookkeeper for her husband’s building and real estate business, supporting the family while encouraging her daughter’s education. She instilled in Laura a love for reading by reading stories to her during childhood, which became a lifelong passion for Laura.

At the age of 78, Jenna Welch was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent surgery and recovered without further signs of the disease. Her diagnosis inspired Laura Bush to become an advocate for breast cancer awareness, working with organizations such as the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Laura praised the foundation’s work in helping more people beat cancer and later promoted international efforts through the Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research of the Americas.

In recognition of her legacy, the Jenna Welch Women’s Center opened in Midland, Texas, on August 10, 2010. The center, operating in partnership with the Laura Bush Institute, provides medical care to women and their families while also promoting research, education, and community outreach.

Jenna Welch’s life and health challenges not only shaped her daughter’s advocacy but also left a lasting influence on women’s health initiatives in Texas and beyond.
