Introduction
Prince Wolfgang of Hesse (Wolfgang Moritz Prinz von Hessen) was born on November 6, 1896, at Castle Rumpenheim in Offenbach am Main, Germany. He was the fourth son of Prince Frederick Charles of Hesse (1868–1940) and Princess Margaret of Prussia (1872–1954). His maternal uncle was Emperor William II of Germany.
During World War I, Wolfgang served as an officer in the command of Field Marshal August von Mackensen. In October 1918, as the German Empire was collapsing, his father, Frederick Charles of Hesse, was considered by the Central Powers as a prospective monarch for Finland. The plan was for Frederick Charles to become king of Finland, replacing Nicholas II of Russia (who had been deposed) in his title as Grand Duke of Finland. Wolfgang was designated as the heir to this potential throne, in preference to his elder twin brother, Philipp, to distinguish the thrones of Hesse and Finland. The plan was short-lived; Frederick Charles renounced his candidacy on December 14, 1918, and the monarchy in Hesse was abolished following the German revolution of 1918–1919.
On September 17, 1924, Wolfgang married Princess Marie Alexandra of Baden (1902–1944), daughter of Prince Maximilian of Baden and Princess Marie Louise of Hanover. The marriage produced no children.
In December 1933, Wolfgang joined the Nazi Party (NSDAP) and the Sturmabteilung (SA). That same year, he was appointed Landrat (district administrator) of Obertaunuskreis, a district in the state of Hesse, a position he held until the end of World War II. His first wife, Marie Alexandra, was killed in an air raid in 1944.
In September 1948, Wolfgang married Ottilie Moeller (1903–1991), the daughter of Ludwig Moeller and Eleanore Steinmann. Wolfgang remained unmarried after this second marriage. He passed away on July 12, 1989.
