Introduction

Stephen Sarre Reynolds was born on February 3, 1974, in Australia. He is the son of Richard and Coralie Reynolds, who are based in Melbourne. Reynolds attended Xavier College in Melbourne, where he held positions as Prefect and House President, and graduated in 1991. He pursued higher education at both Melbourne University and Sydney University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.

Reynolds is married to Sarah Chuldenko Reynolds, who is the step-granddaughter of former United States President Jimmy Carter.

From 1998 to 2004, Reynolds was a member of the Australian punk/rock band The Surrogate, serving as guitarist, songwriter, and founding member. The band released two EPs, "Gentleman's Hardcore" in 2002 and "Quell Dommage" in 2004. Both EPs received significant airplay on TripleJ, a national Australian radio station. The latter was released after the band signed with Universal Music Publishing Group in 2004. Reynolds departed from the group shortly after and subsequently moved to the United States following travels in Europe and Asia.

Reynolds’ visual art career began with his first solo exhibition in 2001 at the Patrizia Autore Gallery in Melbourne. He has participated in over two dozen group exhibitions across Melbourne, Los Angeles, and New York. Notable exhibitions include "Endurance" at the Abington Art Center in Philadelphia in 2009, "3docUmenT" in New York's 42nd Street, and "Tension/Release" at Caren Golden Fine Art in Chelsea, New York. His solo exhibitions include "Secret and Whisper" in Melbourne (2004), "Come In From the River" at La Maison d'Art in New York (2010), "Where After the Valley?" along the Los Angeles River (2014), supported by the US Army Corps of Engineers, and "This Winter Ends" in Los Angeles (2021).

Between 2004 and 2008, Reynolds co-founded the underground New York art collective x+rey. During this period, he also worked as a director and freelance photographer for Getty Images, contributing imagery to the Obama 2008 presidential campaign. He has directed, photographed, and edited over 150 music videos, short films, and commercials, including more than 40 videos for the Australian retail company Cotton On Group.

In 2006, Reynolds wrote and directed a television advertising campaign for the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Nevada and, in 2014, for Jason Carter, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Georgia. He has contributed to building sculptures for several Disneyland theme parks in Los Angeles, Orlando, and Tokyo.

Reynolds gained international attention for his installation "#vaginatunnel" created for model Cara Delevingne, which received coverage from Architectural Digest, The Guardian, and was featured on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert." Currently, he is working in his Los Angeles studio on a series of paintings titled "DESECRATION" and sculptural works.
