Introduction

Chase Price was born in 1731, the son of John Price of Knighton in Radnorshire and his second wife Elizabeth Chase. Elizabeth Chase was the daughter of William Chase of Hadwall in Hertfordshire. Chase Price pursued higher education at Christ Church, Oxford, where he matriculated on 24 November 1749 at the age of eighteen. He was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1751 and was called to the bar in 1757.

In his political career, Chase Price was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Leominster in a by-election held on 1 December 1759. He was returned unopposed in the 1761 general election. He resigned from his seat in March 1767. Subsequently, he was elected unopposed as MP for Radnorshire in the 1768 general election. He was re-elected in this constituency during the contested 1774 general election. His tenure in the House of Commons lasted from 1759 until his death in 1777.

Chase Price married Susan Glanville on 21 March 1765. Susan was the daughter of William Evelyn Glanville of St Clere in Kent and his second wife Bridget Raymond. Together, Chase Price and Susan Glanville had a daughter named Sarah Bridget Frances Price, born in 1767. Sarah married Bamber Gascoyne (the younger).

Chase Price’s family connections extend through his siblings. His brother, Richard Price of Norton Manor, Knighton (who died in 1797), married Margaret Humphreys of Pennant, Montgomeryshire (who died in 1788), the only daughter and heiress of Dr Charles Humphreys. Richard Price and Margaret Humphreys had children, including Richard Price (1773–1861), who served as MP for Radnor from 1799 to 1847.

From his father's first marriage to Anne Barnsley of Knighton, Chase Price was half-brother to John Price, who died in 1780; John was a barrister from The Lodge, Clerk of Chancery at Leominster, and remained unmarried. Another half-brother was Henry Price (1722–1795), who married Elizabeth Foley in 1770; Elizabeth was the daughter of Captain Thomas Foley. Henry Price and Elizabeth Foley had daughters.

Chase Price is recognized as an ancestor of two British Prime Ministers: Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, and Arthur Balfour. He died on 28 June 1777.
