Introduction

Ali Bagheri Kani (Persian: علی باقری کنی; born 1967) is an Iranian diplomat. He held the position of political deputy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran from September 2021 to September 2024. In 2024, he served as the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs. Bagheri Kani is known to have close associations with Iranian principlists and is considered part of the inner circle of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Early Life and Education

Bagheri was born in 1967 in the village of Kan, located in Tehran County. His father, Mohammad-Bagher Bagheri, was a Shiite cleric who served as a member of the Assembly of Experts. His uncle, Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani, also led the same body as Chair of the Assembly of Experts. His brother, Mesbah al-Hoda Bagheri Kani, is a son-in-law of Ayatollah Khamenei. He studied economics at Imam Sadiq University in Tehran.

Career

Bagheri Kani has been engaged in diplomatic service since 1990. He served as Deputy Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council from 2007 to 2013 and currently functions as an advisor to the same council. In the 2013 presidential election, he was the chairman of Saeed Jalili's campaign. Additionally, he worked briefly as a political analyst at Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

On 14 February 2011, Bagheri Kani was arrested following a summons by the Intelligence Ministry. During the presidency of Mohammad Khatami, he served as a political director for the Interior Ministry.

In diplomatic negotiations, Bagheri Kani was the lead negotiator in mediations between Iran and the United States concerning a prisoner release deal in September 2023. He also served as deputy to the foreign minister prior to his appointment as acting foreign minister.

On 20 May 2024, following the death of Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash, Bagheri Kani assumed the role of acting Minister of Foreign Affairs. During this period, on 3 June 2024, he made his first overseas visit as foreign minister to Lebanon. During this visit, he confirmed that Iran was engaged in negotiations with the United States, facilitated by Oman. His tenure as foreign minister lasted until 21 August 2024, when Abbas Araghchi was appointed as his successor.
