Xiao Hua, an actress and writer from the People's Republic of China, was born in the 1970s. According to publicly available information, she had already known the famous director Zhang Yimou during her middle school years. In 1968, Xiao Hua and Zhang Yimou went to the rural areas of Shaanxi for sent-down youth work. During their time in the countryside, she and Zhang Yimou lived together for three years, establishing a deep bond.
After the sent-down movement ended, Xiao Hua was assigned to leave the countryside and work as a factory worker in Xianyang. In 1979, Xiao Hua married Zhang Yimou. They had one daughter named Zhang Mo, born in 1983. Soon after their marriage, Zhang Yimou's talent in filmmaking began to emerge, and he started his career as a film director. In family life, Xiao Hua played the role of wife, taking on responsibilities such as caring for the family.
In 1988, Xiao Hua and Zhang Yimou divorced, and their daughter Zhang Mo was raised by Xiao Hua. Regarding the reasons for their divorce, Xiao Hua disclosed in her 1992 published book "悠悠往事" ("Long-Standing Past") that the content partially involved the influence of a third party in their marriage. After the divorce, Xiao Hua's life became more centered on herself; after working for many years at the Xiying Factory, she was laid off.
Xiao Hua also published works as a writer, often involving her personal emotional experiences. Her life is closely connected to Zhang Yimou’s career; together, they experienced sent-down youth, marriage, family changes, and public attention regarding their emotional entanglement. Xiao Hua’s family background, educational experience, marriage, and career development are significant parts of her personal biography.
