Introduction
Tweed Roosevelt, commonly referred to by his initials T.R., was born on February 28, 1942, in Berkeley, California. He is a member of the Roosevelt family, being the son of Archibald Bulloch Roosevelt Jr. His paternal grandfather was Archibald Roosevelt, the third son of President Theodore Roosevelt, and his maternal grandfather was Harrison Tweed, the grandson of William M. Evarts.
Roosevelt received his early education at Millbrook School in Millbrook, New York. He then attended Harvard University, where he studied social anthropology and graduated in 1964 with an AB in Anthropology and Social Relations. During his undergraduate years, he was involved in a notable incident as a driver in a collision that resulted in injuries to two sophomores. In 1976, Roosevelt obtained an MBA in Finance/Banking from Columbia University.
His early career included several government and community roles. From 1967 to 1974, he served as a special assistant to the Administrator of a major New York City government agency and worked as staff administrator and treasurer of a non-partisan commission examining U.S. presidential nomination processes. Roosevelt also participated in community action and anti-drug programs in Harlem through VISTA, and at one point, worked for the United States Forest Service at Carson National Forest in New Mexico. During the 1960s, he became involved in anti-Vietnam War activities, participating in the 1967 march on the Pentagon and attending the Woodstock Festival in 1969.
In his professional career, Roosevelt worked as a consultant for the MAC Group from 1979 to 1983, focusing on management development. From 1983 to 1987, he was vice president at Gray-Judson & Howard, Inc., where he led strategic planning projects for clients across various sectors including finance, health, manufacturing, and retail. Between 1987 and 1992, he served as an investment advisor at Wingate Financial Group, managing investments and providing financial planning services. He then became president of the Roosevelt Investment Group, Inc., from 1992 to 1996, overseeing client portfolios primarily invested in U.S. equities and bonds.
Apart from finance, Roosevelt has been involved in medical research administration; he was vice president at the Center for Blood Research from 1996 to 1998. He has also served as a spokesperson for Steiff, a German company producing collectible plush animals, notably Teddy Bears named after Theodore Roosevelt.
Roosevelt is currently the chairman of Roosevelt China Investments, a private investment firm based in Boston and Shanghai. The firm is known for a failed retail venture involving Saks Fifth Avenue in China. He is active in education and heritage projects, frequently teaching high school students as part of Long Island University's Roosevelt Summer Honor Institute program, guiding discussions on documentaries, literature, and visiting Sagamore Hill, Theodore Roosevelt's childhood home.
In 1992, Roosevelt completed the Rio Roosevelt Expedition, rafting down the 1,000-mile river in Brazil, a journey that retraced the route explored by his great-grandfather, Theodore Roosevelt, during the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition in 1914. This expedition was documented and included a televised segment.
Roosevelt is a recognized family historian of Theodore Roosevelt, contributing to scholarly and public projects concerning his great-grandfather. He has participated in seminars, lectures, and commemorative events, including speeches at the Wyoming Monument and unveiling a statue of Theodore Roosevelt in Puerto Rico. He also organized a historic cruise for the Theodore Roosevelt Association aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier in 2009 and again in 2019.
