Introduction

Mary FitzMaurice, 4th Countess of Orkney (née O'Brien), was born on September 4, 1755, and died on December 30, 1831. She was a Scottish peer and the only surviving child of Murrough O'Brien, 1st Marquess of Thomond, and Mary O'Brien, 3rd Countess of Orkney.

On December 21, 1777, she married the Honorable Thomas FitzMaurice, who was the younger brother of the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne. The marriage resulted in at least one known child, a son born in 1778, named John FitzMaurice, Viscount Kirkwall. John FitzMaurice was the father of Thomas John Hamilton FitzMaurice, who became the 5th Earl of Orkney.

Mary FitzMaurice inherited the title of Countess of Orkney from her mother on May 10, 1791. Following her husband's death in 1793, she retained ownership of Cliveden, a family estate that historically belonged to the Earls of Orkney and is currently managed by the National Trust.

She died in Beaconsfield in 1831.
