Introduction

Kujō Hisatada (九条 尚忠) was born on September 5, 1798, and died on October 5, 1871. He was a Japanese court noble (kuge) during the Edo period (1603–1868). His father was Nijō Harutaka, and his mother was Higuchi Nobuko.

He was adopted by his brother, Nijō Suketsugu, as his son. Kujō Hisatada held the regent position of kampaku from 1856 until 1862. He retired from public duties in 1863 and subsequently became a Buddhist monk.

His family included his wife, Karahashi Meiko (1796–1881), and several children. His children included Empress Dowager Eishō, with Meiko as her mother; Kujō Michitaka, also by Meiko; Matsuzono Hisayoshi, by an unknown concubine; and Tadayoshi (1853–1895), by the concubine Tsurudono. Additional children were Hiromichi by Concubine Takatsukasa and Nijō Motohiro by another concubine.

He was also the adoptive parent of Kujō Yukitsune (1823–1859), who was adopted by Meiko.

In terms of ancestry, Kujō Hisatada belonged to the aristocratic Kujō family, a branch of the Fujiwara clan, which historically held regent positions in Japan.
