Introduction
The 2nd Baron Fortescue, Matthew Fortescue (English: Matthew Fortescue, 2nd Baron Fortescue; March 31, 1719 – July 10, 1785), was a nobleman of Great Britain.
Life
Matthew Fortescue was born on March 31, 1719, as the son of Hugh Fortescue and his second wife, Lucy Aylmer (daughter of Matthew Aylmer, 1st Baron Aylmer). He was baptized in Greenwich on April 17.
Fortescue inherited the barony of Fortescue following the death of his half-brother Hugh on May 2, 1751. He first took his seat in the House of Lords on May 17 of the same year.
Marriage and Children
On July 8, 1752, Matthew married Anne Campbell (circa 1731 – May 26, 1812, daughter of John Campbell). The couple had two sons.
Their eldest son, Hugh (1753 – 1841), became the 3rd Baron Fortescue and the first Earl Fortescue. Their second son, Matthew (April 12, 1754 – November 19, 1842), married Henrietta Archer on November 1, 1778, with whom he had children.
Additionally, on June 6, 1795, he remarried Henrietta Anne Hoare (died September 5, 1841, daughter of Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Baronet) and had more children.
Public Offices and Death
Fortescue served as High Steward of Barnstaple.
He died on July 10, 1785, and was buried in Filley, Devon, two weeks later on July 21.
At his death, his son Hugh succeeded to the titles.
