Introduction

Thomas Bolling Robertson was born in 1950. He pursued higher education at the University of Virginia, where he earned a bachelor's degree. Robertson furthered his education at the University of Virginia School of Law, obtaining a Juris Doctor degree.

He entered the United States Foreign Service as a career diplomat, achieving the rank of Minister-Counselor in the Senior Foreign Service. During his career, Robertson served in multiple diplomatic assignments, notably in Budapest, Hungary. His first assignment at the U.S. embassy in Budapest was as Chief of the Political Section from 1990 to 1993. He served as the Deputy Chief of Mission from 1998 until March 2001. Between these roles, from 1995 to 1997, he was the Law Enforcement Counselor at the U.S. embassy in Moscow, Russia. In 2001, Robertson returned to Hungary as the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim, serving from March to August of that year.

Robertson was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Slovenia during the administration of President George W. Bush. President Bush nominated him on February 6, 2004, and the Senate confirmed his appointment on August 6, 2004. He was sworn in as ambassador by Secretary of State Colin Powell on September 16, 2004. Robertson served as ambassador to Slovenia until 2007.

After completing his diplomatic service in Slovenia, Robertson became the Dean of the Leadership and Management School at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of State, a position he held from 2007 until his retirement in 2010.

Following his retirement from the Foreign Service, Robertson served on several non-governmental organization boards. From 2011 to 2017, he was a board member of AFS-USA, an organization involved in student exchange programs.

He is known for his involvement in diplomatic and educational activities, with a career spanning several decades in various diplomatic and leadership roles within the U.S. State Department.
