Introduction

Margaret Holles, Duchess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (née Cavendish), was born on 22 October 1661. She died in 1715 or 1716, with her death recorded in London. She was an English noblewoman.

She was the third daughter and the fourth of six children of Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and his wife, Frances Pierrepoint. Her family background placed her within the English aristocracy.

On 1 March 1690, Margaret Cavendish married John Holles, Earl of Clare. Following the marriage, her husband was elevated to the rank of Duke of Newcastle in 1694. This creation of the dukedom was the second of that title, as the first creation had become extinct in 1691 when her father died without a male heir, after her only brother, Henry Cavendish, Earl of Ogle, died in 1680.

Margaret and John Holles had one child, Lady Henrietta Cavendish Holles, born in 1694 and died in 1755. Lady Henrietta married the 2nd Earl of Oxford and Mortimer. She was also the mother of Margaret Bentinck, Duchess of Portland.

Margaret Holles died in the years 1715 or 1716. She was buried at Bolsover Castle, a family residence associated with the Cavendish family.
