Introduction

George Neville-Grenville was born on 17 August 1789. He was initially named George Neville until 1825, at which point he adopted the surname Neville-Grenville. He was the younger son of the Hon Richard Griffin, MP, who later became the 2nd Baron Braybrooke, and the Hon Mrs Griffin, née Catherine Grenville, who subsequently became Lady Braybrooke. Catherine Grenville was the daughter of Prime Minister George Grenville. Neville-Grenville's elder brother was Richard Griffin, who later became the 3rd Baron Braybrooke.

He received his education at Eton College and subsequently attended Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1813, Neville-Grenville was nominated as Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, a position his father secured for him. He held this role for approximately forty years. During his career, Neville-Grenville served as an Honorary Chaplain to Queen Victoria and was the register of the Order of the Garter.

In 1846, Neville-Grenville was appointed Dean of Windsor. Following this appointment, he offered to resign from his position as Master of Magdalene College; however, his resignation was prevented by the Visitor of the college, his brother Lord Braybrooke. Lord Braybrooke intended for his fourth son, Latimer Neville, to succeed Neville-Grenville as Master of Magdalene. At that time, Neville-Grenville's health was declining; by 1850, at the age of sixty, he was described as "a wreck." Despite these health issues, the transition of the mastership was delayed until 1853, when Latimer Neville, aged 26, became Master.

In 1816, Neville-Grenville married Lady Charlotte Legge, daughter of George Legge, 3rd Earl of Dartmouth, and Lady Frances Finch. Lady Charlotte was also the granddaughter of Heneage Finch, 3rd Earl of Aylesford, and Lady Charlotte Seymour, herself the daughter of Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset.

Their children included:

- Ralph Neville-Grenville (1817–1886), a Tory Member of Parliament who married Julia Roberts Frankland-Russell in 1845.

- William Frederick Neville (1818–1882), who served as Vicar of Butleigh and Prebendary of Wells; married Fanny Grace Blackwood in 1847.

- Frances Catherine Neville, who married Rev. Edmund Peel in 1849.

- Georgiana Neville (1821–1882).

- Cicely Neville (1821–1898).

- Seymour Neville (born 1823), Rector of Ockham; married Agnes Mary Proby in 1859.

- Edward Neville (born 1824), a Lieutenant-Colonel; married Georgiana Frances Corbett in 1866.

- Harriet Louisa Neville, married Rev. Charles Arundell St John-Mildmay in 1854.

- Adelaide Neville (deceased 1837).

- Capt Glastonbury Neville (1829–1858), who was killed in action near Ratghur.

- William Wyndham Neville (1834–1858).

George Neville-Grenville died on 10 June 1854 at Butleigh Court, located near Glastonbury, Somerset.
