Introduction

John James Perceval, 3rd Earl of Egmont, was born either in 1737 or 1738, on 29 January. He was the eldest son of John Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont, and Lady Catherine Cecil. His paternal grandparents were John Perceval, 1st Earl of Egmont, and Catherine Parker, daughter of Sir Philip Parker, 2nd Baronet. His maternal grandparents were James Cecil, 5th Earl of Salisbury, and Lady Anne Tufton, daughter of the 6th Earl of Thanet.

Perceval was styled Viscount Perceval from 1748 until 1770. He had several siblings, including Hon. Cecil Parker Perceval (who died at Eton), Hon. Philip Tufton Perceval, a captain in the Royal Navy; Hon. Edward Perceval, a captain in the Royal Dragoon Guards who married Sarah Howarth; and Hon. Catherine Perceval, who married Thomas Wynn, 1st Baron Newborough.

Following his mother's death in 1752, his father married Catherine Compton, sister of the 7th and 8th Earls of Northampton. This wife bore three additional sons and six daughters.

Perceval served as a Member of Parliament for Bridgwater from 1762 to 1768. In the 1768 parliamentary election, he was initially declared re-elected; however, a petition challenged the election results, and the seat was awarded to his opponent, Anne Poulett. During his time in Parliament, Perceval served in the government of William Pitt the Younger.

On 4 December 1770, he succeeded his father as Earl of Egmont and assumed a seat in the British House of Lords. Since his father also held the peerage of Baron Lovel and Holland, Perceval inherited that title as well. His family estate included Enmore Castle in Somerset, which his father had renovated.

In his personal life, John James Perceval married Isabella Powlett on 4 June 1765. Isabella was the daughter of Lord Nassau Powlett, a son of the 2nd Duke of Bolton, and Lady Isabella Tufton. She was also a granddaughter of King Charles II through her maternal line. The union produced one son, John Perceval, who became the 4th Earl of Egmont, in 1767.

John Perceval died on 25 February 1822. His only son succeeded him as the 4th Earl of Egmont. The 3rd Earl of Egmont left a journal, compiled by George Wymberley Jones De Renne and published in 1886.

Through his son, he was the grandfather of Henry Frederick John James Perceval, who became the 5th Earl of Egmont. The 5th Earl died without issue in 1841, after which the titles passed to other descendants of the 2nd Earl of Egmont.
