Introduction
Takasuka Suneko (born January 22, 1799 (Kansei 10, December 17) – November 7, 1837 (Tenpo 8, October 10)) was a woman from the late Edo period in Japan. She was the adopted daughter-in-law of Hachisuka Nariharu, 12th lord of the Awa Tokushima Domain. Her birth name was Sue, and her temple name was Zenseiin.
Life and Family Background
Takasuka Suneko was born on December 17, 1799 (Kansei 10) to the noble court nobleman Takatsuka Masahiro and his concubine. Her father was a well-known court noble, belonging to the aristocratic class.
Marriage and Adopted Daughter-in-law
In 1821 (Wassho 4), following the death of Hachisuka Nariharu’s principal wife, Nōhime, Takatsuka Suneko entered the Tokushima Domain residence in Edo as his adopted daughter-in-law. Hachisuka Nariharu’s main wife, Takatsuka Noriko, was related to Suneko as her niece.
Death and Burial
Suneko died in Edo on November 7, 1837 (Tenpo 8, October 10). After her death, she was buried within the domain residence. Her mausoleum is located at Kōgen-ji Temple in Shimosukenosho-machi, Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture.
