Introduction
George Vere Hobart was born in 1761 and died on 5 November 1802. He was a British politician and held the position of Lieutenant Governor of Grenada in the West Indies. Hobart was the son of George Hobart, the 3rd Earl of Buckinghamshire, and his wife Albinia Bertie. Albinia Bertie was the daughter of Lord Vere Bertie, himself the son of the 1st Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven.
Hobart’s family included notable siblings. His elder brother was Robert Hobart, who became the 4th Earl of Buckinghamshire and was active in Tory politics. Another brother was the Hon. Henry Hobart, who was an Anglican priest.
Hobart served as Lieutenant Governor of Canada before his appointment to Grenada. In 1802, he was appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Grenada, with responsibility under Lord Seaforth, the Governor of Barbados. His tenure as the first Lieutenant Governor of Grenada commenced in 1802 but lasted less than a year due to his death. He contracted yellow fever and passed away at the age of 41 in Grenada. Following his death, Coun Douly Rankin was responsible for escorting his widow, Janet, and their daughter, Vere, back to Britain. Vere Hobart was born posthumously during this return journey.
Regarding his family, George Hobart married twice. His first wife was Jane Cataneo, daughter of Horace Cataneo of Leeds, Yorkshire. Their children included:
- George Robert Hobart (1789–1849), who became the 5th Earl of Buckinghamshire upon the death of his uncle in 1816 but died childless.
- Augustus Edward Hobart (1793–1885), who succeeded George Robert as the 6th Earl of Buckinghamshire and was an ancestor of the current Earls of Buckinghamshire.
- Lady Albinia Jane Hobart (1800–1867), who married Sir Augustus Foster, 1st Baronet.
- Lady Harriet Hobart (1795–1868), who married Jasper Scityon Hagerman of Denmark.
His second marriage was to Janet Maclean, daughter of Colonel Alexander Roy Maclean of Coll and Catherine Cameron. With Janet, Hobart had one daughter:
- Lady Vere Catherine Louisa Hobart (1803–1888), born posthumously, who married Captain Donald Cameron, 23rd of Lochiel, Chief of Clan Cameron.
In 1832, the children of George Hobart were formally raised to the rank of children of an earl, as Hobart would have succeeded his brother to the earldom had he survived him.
