Introduction

Yin Yan, a son of the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, was his youngest son and was actually his 35th son; however, he died prematurely and was not ranked in the official succession. He was born on the first day of the second month of the 57th year of Kangxi's reign (March 2, 1718, Gregorian calendar), and he died on the same day. His place of birth was in the imperial court in Beijing. All biographical information about him is recorded as his death occurring on the same day shortly after birth; no further deeds, titles, or posthumous honors are documented, and there are no records of him being active during his lifetime. During Kangxi’s lifetime, he did not receive any official title.

His mother was Consort Chen, a concubine of the emperor. In the 55th year of Kangxi's reign (1716), on the 16th day of the fifth month (July 5, 1716), Consort Chen gave birth to his older brother, Yunzi (Yun Mi), the twenty-fourth son of the emperor. On the first day of the second month of the 57th year of Kangxi (the same day as Yin Yan's birth), Consort Chen again gave birth to Yin Yan, who also died on the same day. During the Yongzheng period, Consort Chen was posthumously honored as Lady Bai. Records concerning Consort Chen and her children are found in historical texts such as "The Four Genealogies of the Qing Imperial Clan."

In the Yongzheng era, Consort Chen was posthumously titled Lady Bai, reflecting a recognition of her status. Entering the first year of Qianlong’s reign (1736), Emperor Qianlong officially posthumously granted titles to her descendants and further honored her, including the posthumous elevation of Lady Bai, who was the mother of the second-born son, as Emperor Shenzu's (Yingzhi's) ancestor and Dowager Noble Consort Mu. All these records are based on "The Four Genealogies of the Qing Imperial Clan," involving the posthumous elevation and status changes of maternal lineage but do not provide additional information regarding Yin Yan’s personal life or activities.
