Introduction

Lord John Edward FitzRoy was born on 24 September 1785 and died on 28 December 1856. He was a British politician active during the early to mid-19th century. FitzRoy was the sixth son of Augustus FitzRoy, the 3rd Duke of Grafton, who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain, and his second wife, Elizabeth Wrottesley. Elizabeth Wrottesley was the daughter of the Very Reverend Sir Richard Wrottesley, the 7th Baronet, who held the position of Dean of Worcester.

FitzRoy had notable familial relationships within the aristocracy. He was the half-brother of George FitzRoy, the 4th Duke of Grafton, and Lord Charles FitzRoy. Additionally, he was the full brother of Admiral Lord William FitzRoy.

For his education, FitzRoy attended Harrow School, a well-known independent boarding school in England. He furthered his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge.

In his public career, FitzRoy was elected to the British Parliament representing Thetford in 1812. This parliamentary seat was under the influence or control of the FitzRoy family. His election succeeded his brother, Lord William FitzRoy. FitzRoy supported the Whig opposition during his tenure in Parliament. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Thetford until 1818 but was not re-elected in that year.

In 1820, FitzRoy returned to Parliament as one of the two representatives for Bury St Edmunds. This constituency was also considered a family-controlled seat. His election succeeded his nephew, Lord Euston. He served as MP for Bury St Edmunds until 1826, maintaining his position for six years.

Throughout his life, FitzRoy remained unmarried. He passed away at the age of 71 in December 1856.
