Introduction
John Monson, 1st Baron Monson (circa 1693 β 18 July 1748), was a British politician and peer. He was born to George Monson of Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, and Anne Wren, daughter of Charles Wren of the Isle of Ely. His date of birth is approximately 1693.
He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, on 26 January 1708. On 4 April 1722, Monson was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the city of Lincoln. He was re-elected in his seat on 30 August 1727.
In 1725, he was appointed a knight of the Order of the Bath, when the order was reconstituted by King George I on 17 June of that year. Monson inherited the family baronetcy in March 1727, upon the death of his uncle Sir William Monson, becoming Sir John Monson, 5th Baronet.
On 28 May 1728, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Monson of Burton, Lincolnshire. In June 1733, he was appointed Captain of the Honourable Band of Gentlemen Pensioners. Four years later, in June 1737, he was appointed first commissioner of trade and plantations. He was confirmed in this position when the board was reconstituted in 1745 and held the office until his death.
On 31 July 1737, Monson was made a privy councillor.
He married Lady Margaret Watson, the youngest daughter of Lewis Watson, 1st Earl of Rockingham, in April 1725. They had three sons: John Monson, who became the 2nd Baron Monson; Lewis Thomas Monson, who later assumed the surname Watson and was created Baron Sondes in 1760; and George Monson.
John Monson died on 20 July 1748. After his death, the Duke of Newcastle expressed his condolences to the Duke of Bedford, describing Monson as "a valuable man and so amiable a friend" in a letter dated 12 August 1748. Bedford responded with similar sentiments of regret.
