Introduction

George Cholmondeley, Viscount Malpas, was born on 17 October 1724. He was the eldest son of George Cholmondeley, 3rd Earl of Cholmondeley, and Lady Mary Walpole, the daughter of Prime Minister Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford. In 1733, upon his father's accession to the earldom, he adopted the courtesy title of Viscount Malpas.

Cholmondeley's military career included participation in the Second Battle of Fontenoy in 1745. He later attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 65th Regiment of Foot. In 1760, he was appointed colonel for life of the 65th Regiment.

His political career involved serving as a Member of Parliament. He was elected to represent Bramber in 1754—a position he held until 1761. Subsequently, he represented Corfe Castle from 1761 until his death in 1764.

Following his military service in Ireland, Lord Malpas fell ill and died after five days of illness due to inflammation of the bowels on 15 March 1764 at the age of 39. His death occurred prior to the death of his father.

In 1747, he married Hester Edwardes, daughter of Sir Francis Edwardes, 3rd Baronet. They had children, among whom was George Cholmondeley, who succeeded his grandfather as the 4th Earl of Cholmondeley in 1770. This son was later elevated to the Marquessate of Cholmondeley in 1815. Lady Malpas died in 1794.
