Introduction

Mary Constance Charteris, Countess of Wemyss and March (née Wyndham), was born on August 3, 1862, in London, at her parents' residence in Belgrave Square. She was the firstborn child of Percy Wyndham and Madeline Caroline Frances Eden Campbell. Her paternal lineage included George Wyndham, 1st Baron Leconfield, while her maternal ancestry featured Sir Guy Campbell, 1st Baronet. She was a great-granddaughter of Lord Edward FitzGerald, an Irish revolutionary figure, son of James FitzGerald, 1st Duke of Leinster. Her great-great-grandmother was Emily FitzGerald, Duchess of Leinster, belonging to the Lennox family and daughter of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond.

Mary Wyndham had two younger sisters, Madeline and Pamela. Madeline was married to Charles Adeane, and Pamela was initially married to Edward Tennant, 1st Baron Glenconner, later to Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon. Her brothers were George Wyndham and Guy Wyndham.

In her early adulthood, Wyndham became a member of The Souls, an exclusive social and intellectual circle in England. The group included her siblings and their spouses. She and her sisters were subjects of the 1899 painting "The Wyndham Sisters" by John Singer Sargent, depicting Lady Elcho and her sisters, Mrs. Adeane and Mrs. Tennant. Her personal life and social milieu are detailed in the biography "Those Wild Wyndhams" by Claudia Renton.

On August 9, 1883, Wyndham married Hugo Charteris, Lord Elcho, who later inherited the titles of 11th Earl of Wemyss and 7th Earl of March. The marriage produced seven children:

- Hugo Francis Charteris, Lord Elcho (born December 28, 1884; died April 23, 1916), who married Violet Manners.

- Guy Lawrence Charteris (born May 23, 1886; died September 21, 1967).

- Lady Cynthia Mary Evelyn Charteris (born September 27, 1887; died March 31, 1960).

- Colin Charteris (born June 1, 1889; died December 27, 1892).

- Lady Mary Pamela Madeline Sibell Charteris (born October 24, 1895; died 1991).

- Yvo Alan Charteris (born October 6, 1896; died October 17, 1915).

- Lady Irene Corona Charteris (born May 31, 1902; died 1989).

Wyndham was the paternal grandmother of notable figures including society hostess Ann Charteris, Laura Spencer-Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, and novelist Hugo Charteris.

She passed away on April 29, 1937.
