Introduction
William Burr Howell (1796β1863) was the father of Varina Davis, who married Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. Howell's daughter, Varina Davis, became the Second Wife of Jefferson Davis and served as the First Lady of the Confederate States. Varina Davis was also the daughter of William Burr Howell and the wife of Jefferson Davis. Jefferson Davis's wife, Sarah Knox Taylor, was the daughter of Zachary Taylor, the President of the United States from 1849 to 1850.
