Introduction

Francis William Grey (1860–1939) was a British-born Canadian writer and academic. He was the author of the novel "The Curé of St. Philippe," published in 1899. This novel was later republished by McClelland and Stewart's New Canadian Library series in 1970.

Grey was born in England and received his education there. He was a son of Admiral George Grey (1809–1891), who was a younger son of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey. Grey moved to Canada at some point during his lifetime and pursued an academic career. He served as a professor of English at the University of Ottawa. Subsequently, he was employed by the National Archives of Canada.

On December 22, 1885, Grey married Jessie Macleod Rolland. She was the daughter of Charles Rolland of Kilmorie House in Ottawa, who held the title of seigneur of Sainte Marie de Manoir in Quebec. Through his personal and professional experiences, Grey developed a detailed understanding of French Canadian culture.

"The Curé of St. Philippe" is Grey’s only novel. While critics have noted that the narrative may lack strength in storytelling, the novel is recognized for its intricate and detailed portrayal of French Canadian societal and cultural organization during the period. The story centers around a small town undergoing the process of constructing and dedicating a new Roman Catholic church.

Aside from his novel, Grey published academic non-fiction works, poetry, and theatrical plays. His literary contributions extended across multiple genres, although his novel remains his most widely known work.

Grey’s family includes his son, George Archibald Grey (1886–1952). George married Margery Campbell, a daughter of the poet William Wilfred Campbell. Their descendants, Richard and Philip Grey, inherited the earldom in 1963 and 2013, respectively.

There are no further biographical details provided regarding Grey’s later life or additional career achievements.
