Introduction

Princess Tsuguko of Takamado (承子女王, Tsuguko Joō), born on March 8, 1986, is a member of the Imperial House of Japan. She is the paternal second cousin of Emperor Naruhito and is the eldest daughter of Norihito, Prince Takamado, and Hisako, Princess Takamado (née Tottori).

Children and family background:

Princess Tsuguko was born at Aiiku Hospital in Minami-Azabu, Tokyo. She has two younger sisters, Noriko (born 1988) and Ayako (born 1990), both of whom are no longer members of the Japanese Imperial Family.

Education:

Her early education included attendance at Gakushuin Primary School, Gakushuin Girls' Junior and Senior High School. Subsequently, she entered the Faculty of Intercultural Studies at Gakushuin Women's College but dropped out in March 2005. From April 13, 2004, to July 1, 2008, she studied criminal psychology and sociology at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, but did not complete her studies there. She later graduated from the School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University in March 2013 with a bachelor's degree.

Career and public duties:

Princess Tsuguko has been involved in various activities and public duties representing the Imperial Family, often participating in events and ceremonies from the age of her coming of age on March 8, 2006. That year, she was awarded the 2nd class of the Order of the Precious Crown and attended a press conference discussing her future plans.

Between 2006 and 2010, she participated in numerous official engagements. Notably, she represented the Imperial Family at the Silver Wedding anniversary of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg in 2006.

From 2011 onwards, her activities included attending arts exhibitions, charity bazaars, and cultural festivals such as the Tokyo Disabilities Comprehensive Art Exhibition in 2011, the Japan Grand Prix International Orchid Festival in 2012, and an unofficial visit to Sri Lanka in August 2013, where she met with Sri Lankan government officials, toured historic sites, and attended festivals such as the Kandy Esala Perahera.

Her participation in events continued through the 2010s and into the 2020s, including attending the finals of sports competitions (e.g., the Grass Ski World Championships in 2013, the All Japan Amateur Orchestra Festival in 2015), and supporting various organizations related to sports, arts, and social causes.

In 2018, she succeeded her mother as "Honorary President of the All Japan Archery Federation" and became "Honorary Chairman of the Japan Squash Association," actively participating in events organized by these bodies. Other notable events include her attendance at diplomatic receptions, ceremonial events, and exhibitions, such as the European Union delegation celebration in Tokyo in 2018 and a European and Hungarian art exhibition in 2019.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she participated in virtual events, including the Kyoto Congress Youth Forum in 2021 and the "1st Global Youth Forum for a Culture of Lawfulness" in Tokyo in October 2021. In subsequent years, she continued her involvement in cultural, diplomatic, and sports-related events, including archery competitions, peace symposiums, and celebrations of international relations.

References to her activities span from her early public appearances in the 2000s to ongoing engagements in the 2020s, demonstrating her role in representing the Imperial House of Japan in various official, cultural, and charitable contexts.
