Introduction
Lawrence Augustine Washington was born on April 11, 1774, at Harewood, located in what is now Jefferson County, West Virginia. He was the nephew of United States President George Washington and the son of Samuel Washington and his fourth wife, Anne Steptoe.
Following his father’s death, Lawrence Augustine Washington, along with his brother George Steptoe Washington and sister Harriot Washington, resided with their uncle, George Washington. During this period, George Washington arranged for Lawrence and his brother to attend Georgetown Academy for their education. Historical accounts, such as those by historian Ron Chernow, note that during their time at the academy, Lawrence and his brother exhibited energetic and lively behaviors, which reportedly presented challenges to family and educators.
On November 6, 1797, Lawrence Augustine Washington married Mary Dorcas Wood in Winchester, Virginia. The marriage resulted in four children:
- George Samuel Washington
- Emma Tell Washington (1812–1838)
- Lawrence Augustine Washington (1813–1882)
- Mary Dorcas Washington (1817–1861)
Through his son, Dr. Lawrence Augustine Washington, there remains a direct lineage of the Washington family.
Lawrence Augustine Washington passed away on February 15, 1824.
