James Richards was born on October 29, 1723. He died on May 17, 1810. Richards was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives representing Norwalk during the sessions of October 1779 and October 1782.
He served as a captain in the Connecticut Militia during the American Revolutionary War. His military service included participation in the Battle of Norwalk and the invasion of Danbury. Richards initially worked as a clerk before becoming a soldier and sailor.
He was the son of Samuel Richards and Elizabeth Latham. Richards was married to Ruth Hanford. Ruth Hanford was the daughter of Samuel Hanford, the granddaughter of Eleazer Hanford, and the great-granddaughter of Reverend Thomas Hanford of Norwalk. Ruth Hanford's mother was a daughter of Moses Comstock.
