Introduction

Henry Richard Greville, 3rd Earl of Warwick, also known as the 3rd Earl Brooke, KT, was born on 29 March 1779 and died on 10 August 1853. He held the courtesy title Lord Brooke from 1786 until 1816. He was a British Tory politician and held various titles and positions throughout his life.

Family and Education:

He was the son of George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, and Henrietta Vernon, the second wife of the 2nd Earl. Warwick was educated at Winchester College.

Travels:

Between June 1801 and August 1803, Warwick undertook an extensive Grand Tour of Europe. His travels included stops in Copenhagen, Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Switzerland, and various locations across Italy. In March 1803, he joined Sir William Drummond and George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, aboard Captain Sir John Gore's ship HMS Medusa. The purpose of this voyage was to transport Drummond to Constantinople.

Later Travels and Art:

In the late 1820s, Warwick made another tour of Italy, during which he acquired a set of Pietra Dure tables from the Grimanni Palace in Venice. These tables were later sold by Merlin Entertainments at Sotheby's auction in 2015. Additionally, Warwick was an amateur artist; his lithograph "Landscape with Old Trees by Water" was published in 1803 as part of the portfolio "Specimens of Polyautography," and is recognized as one of the earliest lithographs produced in Britain.

Political Career:

Warwick entered the House of Commons in 1802 as one of the representatives for Warwick. He served in this capacity until 1816, when he succeeded his father and inherited the earldom. He served as a Lord-in-waiting (a government whip in the House of Lords) from 1841 to 1846 during Sir Robert Peel's second Tory administration.

Public Service and Titles:

In 1803, his father, as lord-lieutenant, appointed him as Colonel of the Warwickshire Militia, primarily for home defense during the Napoleonic Wars. Warwick continued to command the militia after it was disembodied at the end of the wars and maintained this role during the subsequent period of peace until his death. He served as Recorder of Warwick from 1816 to 1813 (note: the original date appears inconsistent; it is likely a typographical error in the source). Warwick was also Lord-Lieutenant of Warwickshire from 1822 until his death in 1853. He held the ceremonial position of Lord of the Bedchamber from 1828 to 1830.

Honors:

In 1827, Warwick was appointed a Knight of the Thistle, a distinguished Scottish order of chivalry.

Marriage and Family:

In 1816, Warwick married Lady Sarah Elizabeth Savile, daughter of John Savile, 2nd Earl of Mexborough. She was also the widow of John Monson, 3rd Baron Monson. Lady Sarah Elizabeth died in January 1851 at the age of 64. Warwick survived her by two years and passed away in August 1853 at the age of 74. Their son, George Greville, succeeded him as the 4th Earl of Warwick.
