Introduction

Sandrine Chenivesse was born in the southern region of France. Her family background is rooted in the arts; both of her parents are painters who graduated from the Versailles Academy of Fine Arts. The family environment was harmonious, with her parents loving each other dearly, maintaining their relationship for several decades.

In the late 1970s, Chenivesse grew up in the south of France, spending her childhood immersed in a poetic and inspiring environment. She earned a Ph.D. in Sinology from the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE) in Paris, with her master's thesis focusing on the concepts of causality and karmic laws in Eastern religions, particularly examining Chinese folk moral tales such as "Jigong's Hell Journey" and "Jade Calendar Treasury." Her doctoral dissertation concentrated on theories of death in the history of Daoist philosophy, with a specific focus on Daoist history in Fengdu, Chongqing.

As a Sinologist, Chenivesse received a scholarship from the French School of Far Eastern Studies (EFEO) in 1995, enabling her to conduct field research on Chinese culture, philosophy, and Daoism. She visited temples in the old city of Beijing and in Fengdu, Sichuan, and published numerous academic papers. She is fluent in Mandarin and has authored specialized articles on the preservation of Beijing city. After successfully defending her thesis in Paris, she taught at Sciences Po.

In the mid-1990s, Chenivesse lived and worked in China for an extended period, supported by the EFEO office in Beijing. She maintained close contact with scholars in China and Europe, exhibiting a deep understanding and study of Chinese religion and culture.

Regarding her personal life, Chenivesse married Chinese renowned director Jiang Wen in 1997. They have a daughter named Jiang Yilang. According to media reports, Jiang Wen and Chenivesse appeared together at events such as the Cannes Film Festival, leaving a lasting impression. Their relationship was subjected to media speculation, and there were various rumors about the status of their marriage, but neither party publicly responded. Eventually, Chenivesse returned to France, began teaching at a university in Paris, and took her daughter Jiang Yilang with her, while Jiang Wen continued to focus on his film career.
