Introduction
Henry Montagu Villiers was born on 4 January 1813. He was a member of the Villiers family, a historically prominent family in Britain. He was the son of George Villiers and Theresa Parker, and his grandfather was the 1st Earl of Clarendon. In 1839, he received a Royal Warrant of Precedence, which granted him the rank of an earl's son.
He received his education at Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 1837. That same year, he became the vicar of Kenilworth. In 1841, he was appointed rector of St. George's Church in Bloomsbury, London. From 1847 to 1856, he served as a canon of St. Paul's Cathedral.
In 1856, Villiers was appointed Bishop of Carlisle, a position in the Church of England. Subsequently, in 1860, he became the Bishop of Durham, a role he held until his death in 1861.
