Introduction
Captain John Bliss was born on September 2, 1785, and died on December 6, 1822. He was the father of William Wallace Smith Bliss, an American army officer and mathematician who lived from 1815 to 1853. His daughter, Mary Elizabeth Bliss, was the wife of William Wallace Smith Bliss and the daughter of Zachary Taylor, who served as President of the United States from 1849 to 1850.
