Introduction

Colonel John Walpole was born on 17 November 1787 and died on 10 December 1859. He was a British military officer and diplomat. Walpole was a younger son of Horatio Walpole, the 2nd Earl of Orford.

During his military career, Walpole served with the Guards regiment during the Peninsular War, a conflict fought in the Iberian Peninsula involving Napoleonic France and allied powers. He was wounded during the Siege of Burgos, a notable engagement in this conflict.

In the political sphere, Walpole served as a Member of Parliament representing King's Lynn from 1822 until 1831. Subsequently, he held the position of private secretary to Lord Palmerston from November 1830 to August 1833. During this period, Walpole continued his diplomatic career by being appointed British Consul-General and Plenipotentiary at Santiago, Chile.

His diplomatic service in Chile included a promotion to Chargé d'affaires in May 1841. Walpole remained in diplomatic service until his retirement in March 1849.
