Introduction
Herbert Windsor, 2nd Viscount Windsor, was born on May 1, 1707. He was known as The Honourable Herbert Windsor until 1738, when he succeeded to the peerage. He was a British landowner and a Tory politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP). Windsor sat in the House of Commons from 1734 until 1738, when he inherited the titles of Baron Mountjoy and Viscount Windsor following the death of his father.
Herbert Windsor’s parentage includes Thomas Windsor, 1st Viscount Windsor, as his father, and Lady Charlotte Herbert, his mother. Lady Charlotte was the daughter of Philip Herbert, 7th Earl of Pembroke.
In terms of electoral history, Windsor contested the parliamentary seat for Bramber in 1734 but was unsuccessful. Subsequently, he was elected unopposed for Cardiff, a constituency considered a rotten borough controlled by his family. He served as the MP for Cardiff until 1738, when he inherited his father’s titles and moved to the House of Lords.
He married Alice Clavering, who died in November 1776. Alice was the daughter and heiress of Sir John Clavering, 3rd Baronet. She brought a substantial dowry valued at £60,000. The marriage produced several daughters but no male heirs. Notable among his daughters were:
- Charlotte Jane Windsor (1746–1800), who became the Marchioness of Bute through her marriage to John Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute, then the 4th Earl of Bute. John Stuart was created Baron Cardiff in 1776, recognizing the expansive estates in South Wales inherited through his marriage. In 1794, the Mountjoy and Windsor titles associated with her family were revived when John Stuart was elevated to Viscount Mountjoy, Earl of Windsor, and Marquess of Bute.
- Alice Elizabeth Windsor (1749–1772), who married Francis Seymour-Conway, Viscount Beauchamp. Her husband was the eldest son of Francis Seymour-Conway, 1st Earl of Hertford. Subsequently, father and son held the title of Marquess of Hertford.
Herbert Windsor died on January 25, 1758, at the age of 54. Since he had no male offspring, his titles became extinct upon his death.
