Introduction

Thomas Lewis (died 1764) was a Welsh ironmaster known for his role in establishing the Dowlais Ironworks. The ironworks became one of the largest in Wales during the 18th century.

Born into a landed family from Llanishen, Cardiff, Lewis was a member of the Lewis family associated with the Van lineage. His family had longstanding roots in the Llanishen area, and he belonged to the landed gentry class. Lewis held ownership of the Pentyrch blast furnace and several smaller forges prior to his involvement with the Dowlais Ironworks.

In 1759, Lewis became a partner in the Dowlais Ironworks, which was a significant development in his career. His responsibilities included arranging mineral leases and overseeing the construction of the new ironworks. The enterprise was managed under his business entity, Thomas Lewis & Co., which carried out the construction and operational activities of the ironworks. Lewis was the primary figurehead of the company, and his family's financial interest in the business remained intact until 1848, nearly a century after his death.

Apart from his partnership in Dowlais Ironworks, Lewis was also involved in other industrial enterprises. He was a partner in the firm Coles, Lewis & Co., which had interests at Melin-y-cwrt and Ynys-y-gerwn. These ventures contributed to his reputation as a prominent ironmaster of his time.

Beyond his industrial pursuits, Lewis played a role in his local community. His family resided at Llanishen, and he was responsible for constructing the New House in Thornhill, which was located nearby.

In addition to his business activities, Lewis was recognized for his service in public office. He served as the High Sheriff of Glamorgan in 1757, a position indicative of his standing and respect within local society.

Thomas Lewis died in 1764. His contributions to the Welsh iron industry and his public service activities mark his historical significance.
