Akshata Murty

Akshata Narayana Murty was born on 25 April 1980 in Hubli, India. She was raised by her maternal grandparents in Jayanagar, Bangalore, while her parents, N. R. Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murty, worked to establish Infosys, a multinational information technology company. Her mother was the first female engineer at TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company and later became a philanthropist. Murty has one brother, Rohan Murty. Her maternal grandparents were R. H. Kulkarni, a surgeon, and Vimala Kulkarni, a school teacher.

Educationally, Murty attended Baldwin Girls' High School in Bangalore during the 1990s. In 1998, she studied economics and French at Claremont McKenna College in California. She obtained a diploma in clothes manufacturing from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Stanford University.

In her professional career, Murty joined Tendris, a Dutch cleantech company, as marketing director in 2007, where she worked for two years. She subsequently started her own fashion label, which closed in 2012. In 2013, she became a director at Catamaran Ventures, a venture capital fund. She co-founded the London branch of Infosys, the technology firm founded by her father. Her shares in Infosys amounted to approximately 0.93% of the company, valued at about £481 million in 2023. Her investments also included shares in two Jamie Oliver restaurant businesses, Wendy’s in India, and Koru Kids. Additionally, she held directorial positions at Digme Fitness and Soroco, a digital transformation firm co-founded by her brother Rohan Murty.

Murty married Rishi Sunak in August 2009 after meeting him in 2004 at Stanford University. They have two daughters, Anoushka and Krishna. The family owns properties including Kirby Sigston Manor in North Yorkshire, a mews house in Earl's Court, London, a flat on Old Brompton Road, South Kensington, and a penthouse apartment on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, California. Reports from April 2022 indicated that they had moved from 11 Downing Street to a recently refurbished residence in West London.

Murty holds Indian citizenship and is fluent in English, Hindi, Kannada, and French. Her wealth has been a matter of media attention in the UK, especially following her claim of non-domiciled status in 2022. This status allowed her to pay no UK tax on income earned outside Britain, provided she paid an annual fee of £30,000. Later in 2022, she voluntarily renounced her non-domiciled status and committed to paying UK taxes on her global income, a move related to tax treaty provisions designed to prevent double taxation between the UK and India.

As of 2024, Murty and her husband Rishi Sunak were ranked 245th on the Sunday Times Rich List for the UK's wealthiest individuals, with a combined net worth of approximately £651 million (US$827 million).
