Introduction

Babutai (Manchu: ᠪᠠᠪᡠᡨ᠋ᠠᡳ, transliteration: Babutai; 1592–1655), the ninth son of Nurhaci, his mother was the concubine Gemuhu Jala. Born on the tenth day of the eleventh month of the 20th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (November 1592). In the tenth year of Tianming (1625), he accompanied Abai and Tabai to campaign against the Huerha clan in the northern territory of Donghai, gaining military merit. In the eleventh year of Tianming (1626), he was appointed to handle affairs of the Plain Yellow Banner. In the fourth year of Tiancong (1630), Babutai followed Aimin to garrison Yongping. When Ming soldiers attacked Luan County, Babutai was dismissed after a defense failure. In the eighth year of Tiancong (1634), he was appointed as Meile Erchen. He participated in the imperial campaigns against Ming forces, capturing Baoyuan Prefecture. Due to concealing war spoils without reporting, he was dismissed again. In the sixth year of Chongde (1632), he was promoted to Third Rank Defender of the State and returned to military service.

In the first year of Shunzhi (1644), he followed the army into the Pass to pursue Li Zicheng to Qingdu (modern Wangdu, Hebei). In the second year of Shunzhi (1645), he was promoted to First Rank Defender of the State. In the third year of Shunzhi (1646), he followed Le Kedehun in campaigns against Huguang, fighting significantly at Angyuan, Nanzhang, Xifengkou, Guanwangling, and Xiangyang, repeatedly defeating the enemy. In the fourth year of Shunzhi (1647), he was elevated to Marquis of Supporting the Nation for his military achievements. In the sixth year of Shunzhi (1649), he accompanied Wudahi in the campaign against Jiang Xian, and was promoted to Marquis of Zhen Guo. On the twenty-second day of the first month of the twelfth year of Shunzhi (1655), Babutai died, and the court posthumously awarded him the epitaph Kexi (Keixi).
