Introduction
Helen Sandy Pflueger (born April 14, 1954) is an American equestrian who has competed in both eventing and dressage disciplines. Her competitive achievements include finishing second at the Badminton Horse Trials in 1981 and representing the United States in dressage at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Additionally, she participated under the British flag at the World Equestrian Games held in Rome in 1998 and Aachen in 2006, as well as at the European Championships in Arnhem in 1998.
She is the daughter of Nancy and James Pflueger. Her father, James Pflueger, was a Kauai landowner, auto dealer, philanthropist, and self-made millionaire.
On February 1, 1997, Sandy Pflueger married Captain Mark Phillips, a British Olympian and coach of the American eventing team. Phillips was previously married to Princess Anne, the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II. Together, they resided in England with their daughter, Stephanie, who was born on October 2, 1997. Sandy Pflueger also served as a coach for the US eventing team in dressage alongside her husband.
In addition to her equestrian career, Pflueger was involved in the ownership of Hawaii's Ka Loko Dam. The dam collapsed after heavy rain on March 14, 2006, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals. Investigations revealed that unlicensed grading operations had been conducted with the knowledge of local authorities, who failed to enforce a stop-work order.
In May 2012, it was reported that Captain Mark Phillips had left Pflueger and intended to divorce her, after becoming involved with Lauren Hough, another woman.
Within the equestrian community, Sandy Pflueger remains active as a juror. She holds a FEI Level 3 international jury certification in dressage and a FEI Level 4 certification in eventing. She also provides coaching to various riders and conducts clinics internationally. Pflueger served as a member of the jury during the 2016 Summer Olympics in eventing, and she was designated as the ground jury president at the 2025 European Eventing Championships.
