Introduction
Richard Griffin, 3rd Baron Braybrooke (26 September 1783 β 13 March 1858), was a British politician and literary figure associated with the Whig party. He was born at Stanlake Park in Ruscombe, Berkshire. His father was Richard Griffin, 2nd Baron Braybrooke, and his mother was Catherine Grenville, daughter of Prime Minister George Grenville.
In 1797, upon the inheritance of the barony and estate, he assumed the surname Griffin alongside his father's, by royal license. His education included attendance at Eton College, Christ Church, Oxford, and Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a degree as a nobleman. During 1803β1804, he served as a captain in the Royal Berkshire Militia.
His political career began with his election to Parliament for Thirsk in 1805, serving until 1806. Subsequently, he represented Saltash in 1807, Buckingham from 1807 to 1812, and Berkshire from 1812 to 1825. In 1825, he succeeded his father as the 3rd Baron Braybrooke and took his seat in the House of Lords.
As a writer and editor, Braybrooke is noted for editing "The Diary of Samuel Pepys," published in 1825. He also authored "The History of Audley End and Saffron Walden" in 1835 and "The Life of Jane, Lady Cornwallis" in 1842. In 1838, he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Between 1853 and 1858, he held the position of president of the Camden Society.
In his personal life, Lord Braybrooke married Lady Jane Cornwallis, daughter of Charles Cornwallis, 2nd Marquess Cornwallis, in 1819. The couple had five sons and three daughters. Lady Jane died in September 1856 at the age of 57. Braybrooke died at Audley End in March 1858, aged 74. He was succeeded in the barony by his eldest son, Richard.
