Introduction

Francis Robert Stonor, 4th Baron Camoys, was born on December 9, 1856, in Oxfordshire, England. He was the eldest son of The Hon. Francis Stonor and Eliza Peel. His father served as Senior Clerk of the House of Lords, and his mother was a daughter of Sir Robert Peel, the British Prime Minister.

His paternal grandparents were Thomas Stonor, 3rd Baron Camoys, and Frances Towneley, a descendant of William Drummond, 4th Viscount Strathallan. His father was the second son, and his paternal uncle was the first son of the 3rd Baron. His family included other notable relatives such as the Most Rev. Edmund Stonor, Catholic Archbishop of Trapezus, and his maternal family included prominent figures, including Sir Robert Peel, 3rd Baronet, and other members of the Peel family, which held titles and positions of influence in Britain.

He had at least three siblings: Hon. Sir Harry Julian Stonor, Hon. Julia Caroline Stonor, and Major Hon. Edward Alexander Stonor.

Francis Stonor served in the Oxfordshire Yeomanry Cavalry, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. In 1881, upon the death of his grandfather, he inherited the title of 4th Baron Camoys.

He held the position of Lord-in-Waiting to Queen Victoria in the year 1886 and from 1892 to 1895. Additionally, he was involved with rowing and served as a steward of the Henley Royal Regatta, maintaining close ties with its organizing committee.

On September 14, 1881, Lord Camoys married Jessie Philippa Carew in a Roman Catholic ceremony at St Mary of the Angels in Bayswater, London. She was the daughter of Robert Russell Carew of Carew & Co., Ltd., and had notable siblings, including Katherine Jane Carew and Helen Carew. Jessie's family resided at Carpenders Park in Watford, England.

The couple resided at Stonor Park, a property comprising 35 bedrooms located in Oxfordshire. They had several children:

- Ralph Francis Julian Stonor (1884–1968), who married American heiress Mildred Constance Sherman.

- The Hon. Edward Maurice Stonor (1885–1931), who married Bertha Oliver in 1909; the marriage ended in divorce in 1921, and he remarried Florence Hilda Rothschild in 1925.

- The Hon. Hugo Robert William Stonor (1887–1941), who married Esther Gilbert in 1917.

- Lt. Hon. Howard Carew Stonor (1893–1915), who was killed during World War I.

Lord Camoys died on July 14, 1897, at Park Lane in Mayfair, London, following an operation. He was buried at Stonor Park Cemetery in Oxfordshire. His successor was his eldest son, Ralph. His widow remarried Sir Evelyn Ruggles-Brise on September 3, 1914.

Through his eldest son, Ralph, he was the grandfather of Ralph Robert Watts Sherman Stonor (1913–1976), who inherited the barony. The family owned approximately 6,700 acres primarily in Oxfordshire.
