Introduction

Patrick Bowes-Lyon, 15th and 2nd Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, was born on 22 September 1884 at St Paul's Walden Bury in Hertfordshire. His parents were Claude, Lord Glamis, and Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck. He was known as the Master of Glamis from birth until 1904, when his father inherited the earldom, at which point he assumed the courtesy title Lord Glamis.

During World War I, Strathmore served as a major in the 1/5th Battalion of the Black Watch. Three of his brothers also served in the war: John Bowes-Lyon and Fergus Bowes-Lyon served with the Black Watch, with Fergus being killed at the Battle of Loos; Michael Bowes-Lyon served with the Royal Scots and was taken prisoner of war.

On 19 June 1920, he was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Forfarshire, a title associated with the region now known as Angus, which was designated in 1928. He succeeded his father as the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne on 7 November 1944, holding the Scottish peerage as the 15th Earl and the UK peerage as the 2nd Earl.

Patrick Bowes-Lyon was the elder brother of Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who later became Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. As a maternal uncle, he was related to Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret. He was among the leading guests at the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten in 1947.

He married Lady Dorothy Beatrix Godolphin Osborne, daughter of George Osborne, 10th Duke of Leeds, on 21 November 1908 in London. Dorothy was born on 3 December 1888 and died on 18 June 1946. Their marriage produced four children:

1. John Patrick Bowes-Lyon, known as the Master of Glamis, was born on 1 January 1910. He was killed in action on 19 September 1941 during World War II and was unmarried.

2. Lady Cecilia Bowes-Lyon was born on 28 February 1912 and died on 20 March 1947. She served as a bridesmaid at the wedding of Prince Albert, Duke of York, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923. She married Major Kenneth Douglas Evelyn Herbert Harington on 8 March 1939.

3. Timothy Patrick Bowes-Lyon, who became the 16th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, was born on 18 March 1918. He married Mary Bridget Brennan on 18 June 1958; they had one daughter who died in infancy. Timothy died on 13 September 1972.

4. Lady Nancy Moira Bowes-Lyon was born on 18 March 1918 and died on 11 February 1959. She married Lance Amigo Percy Burra Robinson on 25 April 1940; they divorced in 1950. She subsequently married John Michael Matheson Blair in 1954.

Patrick Bowes-Lyon passed away on 25 May 1949 in Angus at the age of 64. His estate was valued at £188,771 for probate in February 1950, with a further grant issued in March 1950 for the Settled Land valued at £110,000. He was succeeded by his second son, Timothy.
